What is EAP?

The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a joint program of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and its unions.

People can experience many stresses in their lives:

  • pressures at home;
  • pressures at work;
  • conflicts with co-workers and family members; and
  • relationship issues.

Often times we can work through these types of issues on our own. But what happens when we can’t and they start impacting our health and ability to work?

EAP provides assistance to you or your immediate family member in resolving a personal problem. The services offered are professional, confidential and readily available whenever the need arises. EAP strives to make a positive contribution to the well-being and growth of each individual engaged in the service, as well as the organization as a whole.

Who is Eligible to Receive EAP Services?

What Does EAP Cover?

The purpose of EAP is to provide employees of government departments and some agencies with an opportunity to obtain help for personal problems that are either affecting or have the potential to affect work performance.

Problem areas may include:

  • substance abuse/addictions;
  • mental health;
  • family issues;
  • relationship concerns;
  • traumatic workplace incidences;
  • grief and loss; and
  • workplace stress.

How Does EAP Work?

When an individual identifies that they have a problem, they can self-refer by contacting the EAP central intake telephone number – 729-2290 (local) or 1-888-729-2290 (toll free). As well, managers and/or supervisors may also make the referral on behalf of the employee, if the employee agrees to participate.

Basic Principles of EAP

  • EAP is available to ALL employees, regardless of classification or level;
  • participation by the employee is always voluntary;
  • EAP is endorsed by both the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and its unions;
  • EAP offers assistance for a wide range of problems; and
  • privacy and confidentiality are paramount to EAP.

Confidentiality of EAP

Confidentiality is the cornerstone of EAP and the program is designed to allow you to resolve your problems under strict privacy guidelines:

  • employers do not have access to your personal information;
  • EAP Coordinators utilize a file system that is not available to any other person, department or agency of Government; and
  • limitations to the confidentiality agreement are clearly outlined by the EAP Coordinator at the earliest possible opportunity.
