Position: Manager – Natural Areas Program
Location:Department of Environment and Conservation, Parks and Natural Areas Division, Deer Lake, NL

Duties:Reporting to the Director this position is accountable for planning, developing, directing, managing and evaluating provincial protected areas programs that ensure the preservation and protection of the Province’s diverse and distinct natural heritage. The candidate is responsible for ensuring that the programs of the Natural Areas section are implemented and resources effectively utilized; overseeing the development and implementation of the various programs and policies of the Natural Areas Section to ensure that wilderness reserves, ecological reserves, waterway provincial parks and Canadian Heritage Rivers are established and effectively managed; developing and implementing a Natural Areas System Plan which will meet provincial, national and international conservation targets; leading research and monitoring programs; ensuring that appropriate management plans and policies are developed for protected areas; ensuring that reserve planning and establishment activities occur cooperatively with the Wilderness and Ecological Reserves Advisory Council; representing the Division and Department on various committees; supervising Divisional GIS, spatial analysis, and mapping activities to ensure that the needs of the Division are effectively met; and performing other related duties as required.
Qualifications:The successful candidate should possess knowledge of conservation planning, protected area management principles and practices (including biodiversity and sustainable use practices), the Wilderness and Ecological Reserves Act and the Provincial Parks Act. S/he must possess strong organization, oral and written communication, interpersonal, supervisory, analytical, and problem solving skills with an ability to perform in a complex, divergent, and multi stakeholder work environment. The above qualifications would normally have been acquired through the completion of an ecology, biology, conservation/environmental science or natural science degree at the Masters level. A combination of education and experience may also be considered. Experience in planning, developing and coordinating policies and programs, conflict resolution, integrated resource planning and financial management will be considered an asset.
Salary:HL – 23 ($64,088.00 - $83,314.00)
